Energy Farming: A Feasible Substitute for Groundwater Over abstraction?

Proceedings of a GIZ- ACCWaM workshop held in June 2013
This workshop was organized to present the results of the “Photovoltaic EnergyBased Farming in Jordan” study, an adaptive measure for managing the effects of climate change. To discuss the related institutional, judicial and technical aspects which render energy farming a feasible option to substitute investing in agriculture in the Azraq aquifer area. Also, to start a national dialogue between the related institutions and define synergies in preparation for the institutionalization of such an initiative.

Photovoltaic based energy farming in Jordan: Sample plant
and system design for grid-connected PV systems

This technical feasibility study describes a typical decentralized grid-connected photovoltaic (PV) system that could be installed on farmland in the pilot area in Azraq, Jordan. It illustrate s technical issues and gives recommendations about connecting and synchronization to a public grid. In addition, the study estimates the investment costs for a PV plant considering the use of PV modules from local manufacturers and costs for evacuation lines, and provides a draft of a tender document with specifications for procurement of PV plants.

Gender and Water in the Pilot Area

Women in rural areas have always played a central role in decision making. In rural areas more than urban areas one is able to talk about equality as a result of cooperation between men and women. Women in rural areas worked in the house and cared about the animals and their increased role in the field started in the 1970s, when males travelled abroad (Binzel & Assaad 2011). Nevertheless, in rural areas many men and women express that women do not play a r ole in agriculture and irrigation. In contrast, the report shows the opposite as women play a direct and indirect role in agricultural production that is also the case in the pilot area.
